Benefits of Video Marketing for Tech Companies

Video marketing used to be limited to commercials on television. With the ubiquity of the internet, though, businesses have the ability to use video in a multitude of ways in order to reach current and potential customers with engaging content that speaks directly to their needs.

This is particularly critical for tech companies. People love to look before buying. They squeeze avocados, peek at the initial chapters of books, or head into a fitting room to see how they look in a new pair of jeans. But what happens when your product isn’t something people can take off a shelf and try on for size? This is where video comes in. Almost 50% of internet users look for video of a product before visiting a store, and shoppers who view video are 1.8 times more likely to buy a product than those who don’t. Video gives people confidence that they know what they’re getting into with a new purchase. And anything that eliminates the voice of doubt from a potential customer’s mind is a plus for your business.

Evergreen content that translates across platforms.

Infographics are fascinating, but they can be overwhelming on your homepage. Newsletters are helpful, but they don’t translate well to social media. Topical blog posts can catch a trend, but they don’t always age well. You can (and should) continually be creating new content to keep your marketing fresh, but it’s also handy to have some content in your back pocket that works well in a wide variety of contexts while retaining its meaningfulness over time. Videos fill this niche perfectly. An introductory video about your product can fit comfortably on the main page of your website, a sales page, embedded in an email or shared on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or even LinkedIn. The same video about a health-related app can work in a blog post about Father’s Day gifts and another one a year later about how chiropractors can use technology to help their patients develop better daily habits. No other type of media is quite so flexible while also encouraging increasing levels of engagement with your brand.

Grow your credibility.

Some things truly do have to be seen to be believed, and in a world filled with literally unbelievable marketing claims, getting your product seen is critical. Demonstrations, testimonials, how-tos, and troubleshooting videos all show potential customers that you’re worthy of trust. The more ways you can actually show that your products are reliably doing what they’re supposed to, the more credibility you earn from a justifiably skeptical audience. You have the proof in your hands. Statistics and citations will get this proof into an interested customer’s head, but video is the quickest way to get it from there into their heart. Sometimes that’s the difference between a customer and someone who once thought about becoming one.

It’s … actually fun.

Here’s the thing: people don’t watch a billion hours of YouTube every single day because it’s a drag. They do it because it’s enjoyable. Yes, a lot of that is videos of corgis in the snow, but it’s also book reviews, DIY projects, TED talks, hairstyle tutorials, political debates, and more. As an example, here an inspiring and fun TED talk. It also happens to be one of the most popular TED talks of all time – Simon Sinek – How great leaders inspire action. 38M+ views on TED.com and another 8M+ on YouTube
People enjoy learning new things, and they love sharing what they know, as evidenced by all of the user-generated video content on social media. So if you’re panicking about crafting the perfect video in order to market your product, take a deep breath. Just like a kid with a cool new skateboard, you’re someone who wants to share what they love with the world. Enjoy the process.
